signed the Social Security Bill into law. Before the Social Security Act was passed, there was no typical retirement age in the United States. Most people worked until they (or their employer) decided they could no longer work.

Jul 02, 1964

President Lyndon B. Johnson (D) signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 into law. The act prohibits discrimination by federal and state governments and applies to employment, public accommodations, and other areas.

Jul 30, 1965

President Lyndon B. Johnson (D) created Medicare on July 30, 1965 when he signed the Social Security Amendments of 1965 into law. The law also created Medicaid, which provides health coverage for people with low incomes. The signing ceremony was attended by former President Harry S. Truman (D), who was the first person to enroll in Medicare.

Apr 01, 1979

President Jimmy Carter (D) created the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), by an executive order on April 1, 1979, to bring together nearly two centuries of disaster recovery programming and financing that were in existence.

Aug 05, 1997

The Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) was created by the United States Congress in 1997. The program was a result of a collaboration between First Lady Hillary Clinton (D), Senator Ted Kennedy (D), and Senator Orrin Hatch (R).

Mar 23, 2010

President Barack Obama (D) signed into law the Affordable Care Act (ACA) also known as Obamacare. The ACA was created by the United States Congress in 2010. It improved access to affordable health insurance, protected consumers from insurance company practices, expanded Medicaid, and helped cut the uninsured rate.
